Chainsaw Wood Carving

banks pin nailer

Many artists are starting to explore the art of wood carving with a chainsaw. This art form is an extension of their skills and often uses a mix of traditional and modern carving techniques. Crager and Tracie Dugas, his wife, have been creating beautiful wood carvings since the 1960s. In between shows, they try to get home as much as possible to help out with painting and staining. His daughters now help him with staining and painting, as well. White pine is preferred by them as it is lighter and less susceptible to cracking.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is a chainsaw wood carving artist from Reedsport. He is a Poughkeepsie resident and lives in Oregon with his wife and their son. Anderson has several degrees in fine arts. He teaches art to Pre-K through fifth graders. Anderson has carved many sculptures throughout Long Island. His pieces range from standing trees to smaller pieces like corn ear sculptures. He is currently working to create a sign for Youngs Farm, Riverhead.

The $400 chainsaw lets him create intricate sculptures that would have taken days to chisel from a tree. Because they can be recycled, chainsaw wood carving is a more eco-friendly option than chisels or hammers. Anderson advertises his business through word of mouth and has carved a giant cobra and a great blue heron for a mechanic in Wading River.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie dugas's life-size wood carving of a wizard is an excellent example of her ability as a woodcarver using a chainsaw. The 49-yearold lives in Clare Nova Scotia between Digby, Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was one of several artists who exhibited their work during the Canada Day weekend in Sydney, Nova Scotia. While the Sydney waterfront was overflowing with tourists, it provided an opportunity for locals and visitors to enjoy the waterfront as well as a chance to catch a glimpse at the chainsaw carver.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager did not consider himself an artist. His skills with a chainsaw were only averagely proficient. But his passion for carving led to a full-time occupation six years later. Crager has sold over $1 million in carvings throughout the Eastern U.S. Crager was born in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. He grew up watching the chainsaw wood carver at his work. The artist's style fascinated him so he called his boss one day and gave his two week notice.

When it comes to material choice, Crager prefers white pine because it's easily available from tree trimming companies. However, many people prefer other kinds of wood. Crager will follow the grain of the wood to create his pieces. Crager may know exactly what he's making before he starts any project. However, he often changes his mind mid-project. While small projects can be completed in a matter of minutes, large carvings can take up to 33 to 35 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins is a chainsaw wooden carver. His wood carvings often include many animals and are very detailed. His works have been admired by neighbors and tourists alike. Blue Arrow Farm's entrance and coffee shop are adorned with chainsaw sculptures that are so detailed and large. Blue Arrow Farm is run by Don Oriolo. He is also the owner and manager of Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo's wife, met during a New Jersey State Fair chainsaw competition.

The 15-year old wood carver was awarded the award at a Reedsport, Oregon competition. He had carved before, but hadn't used a chainsaw. His carvings include an otter and a mother bear, as well as a squirrel peeking through a tree. And now he's preparing to compete in the National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

FAQ

Where do I start with woodworking?

You can learn the most effective way to build furniture by actually building it. You'll need tools, and you'll have to make mistakes along the way, but if you keep at it, you'll eventually figure out what you're doing.

Start by choosing a project you'd like to complete. You can make a simple box or a large entertainment center. Once you've settled on a project find a local skilled woodworker. Ask him or her for advice on what tools you'll need and where to find them. You might even ask whether there's someone else you can talk to who does this kind of work.

How do I determine what kind of wood my project is made from?

Always read the label when purchasing wood. The label should contain information about the wood species, its moisture content, and whether it has been treated with preservatives.

How do you know which tools are the best for you?

When shopping for tools, it helps to think about your needs and preferences. What do you prefer: metal or plastic handles? What size screws and nails do you use most often? Are you comfortable with power tools, or would you rather use hand tools?

How can a beginner woodworker make money?

Many people learn how to make furniture in order to set up an online business. But if you're just getting started building furniture, there are other ways to earn money besides selling on Etsy. You can sell at local craft fairs. Or you could offer workshops for others who want to learn how to build their own furniture. If you have experience as a carpenter or builder, you might consider offering services such as remodeling homes or creating custom pieces for clients.

Where can I find free woodworking plans?

For free woodworking blueprints, you don’t need to read any magazines or buy any books. All you need to do is search Google. Simply type "free woodworking” into the search box and you'll find hundreds of websites that offer free plans.

Where can I buy hardwood lumber?

Home Depot can sell hardwood lumber. You can find all types of wood products at Home Depot, such as flooring, cabinets and furniture.

There is also a wide selection of engineered hardwoods, including Ipe (Araucaria Angustifolia), Brazilian Cherry(Pau d'Arco), Mahogany (Swietenia Mcrophylla).

These woods can be found online by searching for "hardwood lumber" in Google.

What would be your first step in woodworking?

Start with softwood like pine, poplar and ash. Once you feel comfortable with these two, move on to hardwood.

Statistics

  • Average lumber prices rose about 600 percent between April 2020 and May 2021. (familyhandyman.com)
  • In 2014, there were just over 237,000 jobs for all woodworkers, with other wood product manufacturing employing 23 percent; wood kitchen cabinets and countertop manufacturing employing 21 percent. (theartcareerproject.com)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)
  • Overall employment of woodworkers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (bls.gov)

How To

How can you measure wood accurately?

Wood measurement can be done using several methods. We use a variety of methods to measure wood.

A digital caliper has two jaws that open and close. The one jaw holds the object to be measured, while the other measures distance between them. The digital caliper is great for measuring small distances like thicknesses of wood.

Laser levels have an infrared light beam that projects a line across the floor. The laser emits red dots on the line. It is possible to see if the surface of the surface are even by looking down at it. For larger surfaces, laser leveling is the best method of checking accuracy.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. The center of the device contains a bubble. The device will inform you if the surface is level if the bubble is in the center. The bubble levels can be used to check the accuracy of smaller areas.
