cutting and shaping tools

The ball in a cage carving is an intriguing one. Although this may appear like a complicated carving, it is actually a simple one that requires only one block. These two objects actually are intertwined. We'll be discussing the materials and techniques used to carve this object, as well as the differences between the later and early carvings. You can read on to learn about the different types used in cage carvings.

Techniques

To carve a ball in a cage, the first step is to cut the block and shape it. It should be approximately three inches in diameter. Mark the ends of each block with pencil marks. Continue to cut out the block until it fits comfortably between the rails. To round the block make small cuts on either side. The rest of the wood can be cut with a handsaw. Be careful not to remove too many.

After cutting the cube out of wood, draw a template for the shape you want. Use a paper straightedge to trace the squares onto your cube. Connect the corners with connecting lines. A depth gauge can be used to measure the distance between your template and the cutout. This distance will allow you to calculate the inner cage's depth. The finished piece should have a height that is approximately two-thirds higher than the original cube.

Materials

Ball in the cage carvings make for a very unique project. This piece of woodcarving can seem hard at first but is actually quite simple to make. Both the ball and the cage are made of one block of carving material. The two objects are carved in a way that makes them intertwined. You'll find that the carving process is easy and fun, and you'll soon be carving attention-getting favorites!

You will need a block of wood that is the right size and length to carve your ball into a cage. You will need a block measuring 3 1/2" by 3 1/2". How To

How to join wood with no nails

Woodworking is an enjoyable hobby. Woodworking can be a fun hobby because you can work with your hands to make useful objects from wood. However, there are times when you want to join two pieces of wood together without having to use nails. This article will demonstrate how to do so to preserve the beauty of your woodwork.

Before you can join the wood pieces together, you need to remove any rough edges. Avoid leaving sharp edges that could lead to problems later. After you have completed this step, you are ready to glue your boards together.

If you are working with hardwood, only one side should be glue. If you're using softwoods like pine or cedar, you should put glue on both sides. Apply the glue to the boards and press them down until they are securely attached. Be sure to let the glue dry before you move on to the next step.

After you glue your boards together, drill holes at the joints where screws will be inserted. Depending on the type of screw that you use, the size of these holes will vary. For example, if your screw is a 1/2-inch wooden screw, drill a hole that is at minimum 3/4 inches deep.

Once you have drilled your holes you will need to drive the screws through each joint and into the backside. Don't hit the board's surface. You could damage the finish. Avoid hitting the screws' ends too often when driving screws. This will help prevent splitting of the end grain.

Now that your project is finished, you'll want to protect it from the elements. You can either seal the entire piece of furniture or cover the top. Either way, you'll want to use a product that will last for years to come. There are many options: oil-based varnishes; polyurethane; shellac; lacquer.

These products can usually be found at any home improvement store. Just make sure that you buy the right kind for the job. Some finishes are toxic and should not ever be used indoors. Always wear protective gear when handling any of these finishes.
