Imperial tapes show inches

The imperial tape measures are able to display inches and centimeters in two distinct ways. One type shows inches in very small increments, the other shows centimeters. In general, the smallest increment in an imperial tape measure is 1/16''. In metric, the smallest increment is 10mm. This makes the imperial scaling more precise, even though tape measures are often marked in inches. Here are some methods to identify which tape measure is best for what you are measuring:

Metric tapes display fractions of an inch

On the blade, the equivalent fraction of an in. is written for Metric tape measurements. These tapes can be marked as small as one-quarter of an inch. Measurements that exceed the markings of half an inch can be done by looking at the halfway mark between the 1/2-inch mark (and the next marking). The same process works for fractions up to a quarter-inch. To read a metric tape measure, lay it along the length you want to measure. For the best measurement, ensure that the tape measure is perfectly aligned.

Get precise measurements

Take precise measurements with a tape measuring tape. Follow these steps. Always read all markings on tape measures from the top. This will ensure that there are no misinterpretations between the measurements. The tape measure will indicate one inch if the shelf's length is 1 in. If the markings aren't on the top of the shelf, measure from the side. You will need to subtract one-fourth inch from the measurement.

How to join two pieces of wood together without nails

Woodworking is a popular hobby. It is relaxing and enjoyable because you can create something useful with wood. There are times when two pieces of wood need to be joined together. This article will show you how to do it to make your woodwork projects look great.

First, remove any sharp edges from the wood pieces before you join them. Do not leave any sharp corners as they could cause problems down in the future. Now you can start gluing the boards together.

You should only glue one side of hardwood. Use glue on both the sides for softwoods, such as cedar or pine. Press the boards down until the glue is fully incorporated. Be sure to let the glue dry before you move on to the next step.

After you glue your boards together, drill holes at the joints where screws will be inserted. The size of these holes depends on what type of screw you choose to use. If you are going to use a half-inch wood screw, you will need to drill at least 3/4 inch deep.

Once you have drilled your holes you will need to drive the screws through each joint and into the backside. Don't hit the board's surface. You could damage the finish. When driving the screws, try to avoid hitting the ends of the screws too much. This will avoid splitting in the wood's ends grain.

You'll need to protect your completed project from the elements. You can either seal the entire piece of furniture or cover the top. It doesn't matter what method you use, you want something that will last many years. Examples include oil-based varnishes and polyurethanes, shellac, lacquer and others.

These products can be found in most home improvement shops. You should make sure you are getting the right type for the job. Remember that some finishes can be toxic, so you should not use them indoors. Always wear protective gear when handling any of these finishes.
